Medi-Solve Coatings (Natick, MA) offers patented multi-layer and mono-layer guidewire coating systems that provide lubricity and abrasion resistance. The two layers are formed using an aqueous solution system that does not require UV curing equipment. The coating system comprises a non-hydrophilic polymer primer and a hydrophilic polymer topcoat. The coating materials do not comprise any crosslinkers or reactive functional groups and do not require the use of a hazardous solvent. The multi-layer coating has a maximum thickness in the range of a few microns. The coatings are applied at low temperatures, and in such a way that the coil is coated discreetly, without forming a thick layer between the coil portions. Such a coating prevents substantial bridging between the loops of the coil, preventing the coil tip from being stiff or non-trackable.
