Precision Metering Pumps

Precision metering pumps from Circor International, Burlington, MA, are engineered to handle high-pressure and viscous materials with the reliability and accuracy demanded by medical device manufacturers. Zenith precision metering pumps support critical processes such as extrusion (tubes, sheets, profiles), coatings (pill, tube, sheet, x-ray), transdermal adhesives, bandages, foam production, and suture manufacturing. The Zenith 9000 Series, featuring an optional advanced MagDrive configuration, provides precise control and eliminates leakage risks. The company’s Thin Film Separator Melt Pumps deliver uniform material flow in extrusion processes.

Robot Conveyor System

A high-performance gantry robot with an integrated slip roller conveyor system is available from Dispense Works, McHenry, IL. The RC series x-y-z motion system is mounted above the dispensing plane, enabling the robot to straddle the conveyor, all within a compact and space-saving structure. This modular design can accommodate up to 16 valves. Motion paths can be directly imported from CAD and graphic programs, or users can easily teach the system using an intuitive function that allows users to visualize and draw dispensing patterns on the screen while simultaneously teaching the machine. File modifications can be made with just a few clicks.

AC-DC Power Supplies

XP Power, Singapore, has introduced a range of compact, low-profile (25.4 mm) AC-DC power supplies with flexible cooling options and power ratings from 110 to 420 W, allowing more efficient use of space within the end equipment. Approved for use in medical applications, the CCR units feature a baseplate-cooled design that ensures effective thermal management and quiet operation for noise-sensitive applications, even in sealed enclosure environments. The range is compliant for medical applications to IEC 60601-1 Ed. 4 with primary to secondary isolation at 4000VAC (2 x MOPPs) and 1 x MOOP from primary to earth (1800 VAC) and secondary to earth (1500 VAC). Combined with low earth (<300 μA) and patient (<75 μA) leakage currents, the CCR range is ideal for easy integration into body-floating (BF) rated medical devices, including respiratory care, imaging, patient monitoring, and patient treatment.

UV-Cured Adhesive

EpoxySet, Woonsocket, RI, has introduced an acrylated urethane adhesive for bonding PVC, polycarbonate, and most other plastics. Designed for bonding PVC tubing in medical devices, UV-8675 also bonds well to glass and metals. The semirigid polymer offers high bond strength without causing stress cracks. It can be cured in thicknesses from 10 μm and up to 10 mm. It can be used in very tight adhesive applications as well as for larger gap filling. The adhesive is low-to medium-viscosity matrix that can be easily dispensed by hand or pneumatic machine. With a cure of under 10 seconds (365 nm, LED or broadband light), it produces a tough, high strength adhesive with an elongation of 210 percent and is excellent for temperature cycling from –40 to 85 °C.

Supercapacitors

A line of supercapacitors from Schurter, Santa Rosa, CA, are ideal for demanding applications that require high capacitance in the most compact dimensions such as in mobile devices, wearable electronics, sensor technology, small power supplies, or devices with mobile energy generation and uninterruptible. The prismatic supercapacitors have a thickness of just 0.4 mm. Rated voltages include 4.2, 4.5, and 5.5 V. Features include low ESR with high current handling, very low self-discharge, and high-power density.

Light-Protection Labels

Schreiner MediPharm, Blauvelt, NY, offers light-protection labels for prefilled syringes, which provide effective protection for light-sensitive active pharma ingredients (APIs) such as biologics and biosimilars. The labeling solutions, which combine light protection, safety, and functionality, can be used for a wide range of prefilled syringes. Light-sensitive drugs react sensitively to UV and light rays, which may impair their efficacy and shelf life. The functional labels are suitable for all commonly used syringe types and sizes — whether they are fitted with needles or Luer lock adapters. The labels are customized to suit COC or glass syringes and can be processed without exposure to heat.

Mass Flow Controller

Festo, Islandia, NY, has expanded the capabilities of its mass flow controller to improve connectivity, control dynamics, and flow range. The VEMD controller is applied in the medical laboratory, pharmaceutical, and other industries to automate the flow control of oxygen, nitrogen, argon, CO 2, and air. It is also used in 3D printing applications where inert gas protects printed material during deposition. For the most often used gases, the controller is configured via software. Automated configuration reduces setup time. An integrated control circuit with thermal sensor enables the controller to work precisely and dynamically with minimal hysteresis.

Plasma Pretreat for Syringes

Plasmatreat, Steinhagen, Germany, has developed a technology that eliminates the need for harsh chemicals and significantly reduces energy consumption, offering a sustainable alternative for industrial production lines. The Openair-Plasma systems deliver efficient surface activation, cleaning, and coating. It improves the surface wettability of COC syringe barrels and thereby optimizes their siliconization. The targeted increase in surface energy enables a homogeneous distribution of silicone oil, which increases the functional reliability of the syringes in the long term. Its plasma control unit technology monitors process gas flow, plasma output, nozzle rotation, and back pressure, and then records them for quality control and monitoring.
