The IDEA stepper motor drive platform from Haydon Kerk Motion Solutions (Waterbury, CT) now has the capability of communication using an RS-485 data protocol. The RS-485 protocol is suitable for long data transmissions and applications requiring immunity to electrical noise. It utilizes “differential” signal lines for limiting common mode noise coupling and twisted pair cabling for canceling out induced noise current. This allows IDEA devices to communicate over a network of 1000 ft without the need for termination resistors.
