Precision Specimen Loader
Instron, Norwood, MA has released a precision specimen loader for performing mechanical testing on thin film and foil specimens that is designed to address the unique challenges associated with handling delicate specimens. The loader consists of three parts: a width block that ensures your specimen lines up with the center of the jaw faces, a linear rail, and the alignment clip. The alignment clip is detachable and can be loaded on a workbench. Once loaded with a specimen, it snaps onto the linear rail with pins and magnets, which guides the specimen into the test space and helps ensure consistent and reliable test results.

Collimating Lens Assemblies
Lumedel, LLC, Manchester, NH, has introduced fiberoptic collimating lenses optimized for fiberoptic patch cords with high numerical aperture (NA) up to 0.63. Very high NA, multimode optical fibers provide the best optical coupling efficiency with LEDs to deliver maximum output power. Two models are available that use high NA aspheric lenses: the CL12G with a lens diameter of 12.5 mm and the CL30G with a lens diameter of 30 mm. Both feature an SMA905 connector and user adjustable focus to get the best beam collimation at the operating LED wavelength. The lens material is molded glass and can function over a wide spectral range of 350-2000 nm.

Fume Hoods
Fume hoods from HEMCO, Independence, MO, are offered in 24, 30, 36, and 48 in. wide models. The EcoFlow fume hood size makes it ideal for additional hood space applications. Because of the reduced size, this hood requires less exhaust air to be drawn from the lab. A fully adjustable sliding sash is made of 3/16 in. thick shatterproof Plexiglas and is fully adjustable to allow easy access into the fume chamber. Easy-Touch operation allows for precise positioning. A full selection of accessories and components including work surfaces, base cabinets, plumbing and electrical services are available.

Precision Grinder
A precision grinder from ANCA, Melbourne, Australia, is designed for producing tools such as ballnose, corner radius endmills, and complex or intricate profile tools. The FX7 ULTRA includes a one-nanometer control system, a servo control algorithm for smooth motion, system and mechanical upgrades to enhance stiffness and rigidity, and in-process measuring, balancing, and runout compensation for consistent accuracy. The unit, which can grind down to a size as small as 0.1 mm, includes the company’s patented Motor Temperature Control. The nanometer control enables micro-adjustments for smoother axis movement, resulting in optimal tool geometry.

ERP Software
Cetec ERP, Austin, TX, has introduced a new scheduling feature that allows users to estimate static buffer time occurring before or after work is completed at a given work location. This single step will drive a scheduled entry for the work order without impacting labor time, estimates, or cost. The new field, called Buffer, can be managed in two ways: Defaults can be set from a table in the Data Maintenance page named “OrdlineStatus,” or they can be set manually/overridden in a part’s labor plan or order specific labor plan. Previously, modeling a traveler/router’s schedule to include a “buffer” period occurring before or after work was completed at a work location took several steps.

Simulation Software
COMSOL, Burlington, MA, has added data-driven surrogate model functionality to its simulation software for efficient standalone simulation apps and multiphysics-based digital twins. COMSOL Multiphysics version 6.2 also features high-performance multiphysics solvers for the analysis of electric motors, up to 40 percent faster turbulent CFD simulations, and an order of magnitude faster impulse response calculations for room and cabin acoustics. Additionally, it is now up to seven times faster to perform boundary element analysis (BEM) for acoustics and electromagnetics when running on clusters. The latest software version also introduces the ability to make simulation apps with automated updates through timer events.

Linear Servo Motor
A linear servo motor from Moticont, Van Nuys, CA, combines high precision and high force in an easily integrated package. The GVCM-095-064-01 linear voice coil servo actuator, also called a moving coil motor, features zero cogging, high speed, high acceleration/deceleration, and high precision accuracy and repeatability when operated in a closed servo loop. The precision ground 0.1572 ± 0.0003 in. (3.993 ± 0.008 mm) diameter shaft guided by a linear bearing in the extended position is 2.500 in. (63.5 mm) long. It can tolerate a side load to 2 lbs. (9.0 N) and has 1.500 in. (38.1 mm) of travel with a high-force-to-size ratio of 24.4 lbs. (108.6 N) of continuous force and 77.1 lbs. (343 N) of peak force at a 10% duty cycle.
