What government group was formed to study medical devices and recommend legislation, ultimately leading to the 1976 Medical Device Amendments?
The Cooper Committee. Chaired by Theodore Cooper, MD, then director of the National Heart and Lung Institute, the committee was organized in 1970 specifically to study medical devices as part of President Richard M. Nixon’s endorsement of medical device legislation. The committee recommended that any new legislation be specifically targeted to the device industry, because devices presented entirely different issues from drugs. Source: www.fda.gov
