In March of 1973, the Six-Million Dollar Man TV series introduced the world to the possibility of a bionic man. What device made bionics a reality 20 years later?

The Edinburgh Modular Arm System. The prosthetic was created by a team of five bioengineers at the Margaret Rose Hospital in Edinburgh, UK, while the surgical team was led by Dr. David Gow. The new limb incorporated microchips, circuitry to enable it to be engaged in different positions, and a host of tiny gears, pulleys, and motors, all sheathed in highly realistic artificial skin.
