In December, we asked Medical Design Briefs readers to cast their ballot to choose from our 12 Products of the Month the technology they felt was the most significant new introduction to the design engineering community in 2016. The selected products reflect advances that enable new innovations in medical technology. Here are the winners of the 2016 Medical Design Briefs’ Readers’ Choice Products of the Year.

J750 3D Printer

Stratasys Ltd., Minneapolis, MN, introduces an industry first with its new 3D printer, the J750. This solution enables customers for the first time to mix and match full color gradients alongside an unprecedented range of materials to achieve onestop realism without post-processing. This, together with the system’s versatility, makes the J750 the 3D printing solution for product designers, engineers, and manufacturers, as well as service bureaus.

The Stratasys J750, an addition to the Objet Connex multicolor, multi-material series of 3D printers, allows customers to choose from more than 360,000 different color shades plus multiple material properties ranging from rigid to flexible and opaque to transparent. Prototypes can include a vast array of colors, materials, and properties in the same part, speeding production of realistic models, prototypes, and parts for virtually any application need — as well as delivering 3D printing versatility to produce tooling, molds, jigs, fixtures, and more.

Designers and engineers can physically experience product prototypes within hours of developing an initial concept for immediate design and function validation with internal stakeholders and end users. Design decisions can be made instantaneously and with full confidence to help accelerate product delivery.

Accu-P MP Series Thin Film Chip Capacitors

AVX Corporation, Fountain Inn, SC, has released a new series of thin film chip capacitors specifically designed to meet performance specifications for implantable medical devices. Delivering extremely tight capacitive tolerances, exceptionally repeatable performance, and low ESR and high Q at high frequencies, including VHF, UHF, and RF bands, AVX’s new Accu-P® MP Series capacitors also exhibit high stability with respect to temperature, time, frequency, and voltage variation.

The capacitors are subjected to accelerated life, damp, and heat testing and final quality inspections for capacitance, as well as proof voltage, IR and breakdown voltage distribution, temperature coefficient, solderability, and dimensional, mechanical, and temperature stability. They are ideal for use in medical RF signal and power applications that require extremely high accuracy, such as embedded medical systems and implantable devices.
