A team at RMIT University has created a hybrid sound wave that can be used in biomedical devices to manipulate highly fragile stem cells. The "surface reflected bulk waves" reduce the time required for inhaling vaccines through the HYDRA nebulizer device, from 30 minutes to as little as 30 seconds.
The HYDRA tool converts electricity passing through a piezoelectric chip into mechanical vibration, or sound waves, which in turn break liquid into a spray.
The development of the new class of sound wave also enables researchers to nebulize stem cells straight into a specific site within the lung to repair damaged tissue.
