Cyclic loading can induce product failure at stresses much lower than the yield or fracture strengths. When designing products that will experience load fluctuations, it is important to perform a fatigue analysis to determine the expected service life of the products.

Temperature variations (for example, due to unsteady ambient conditions or induced by changing electric current) can result in stress fluctuations that lead to fatigue failure.
