Mark Wehde, chair of Mayo Clinic division of engineering.

Focusing on the future of healthcare, Mark Wehde, chair of Mayo Clinic division of engineering, will present the keynote at MD&M Minneapolis, Nov. 2. He will examine at the far-reaching effects that the pandemic has had on the delivery of healthcare. He will also explore the latest technologies — from AI to 3D printing — that are shaping the future of healthcare.

The recent pandemic has accelerated the transition from our traditional hospital-centric medical care system to a more virtual, distributed care. Customer expectations, rising cost, and the value-based care reimbursement models are creating an environment that is ripe for disruption. This shift is being enabled by advances that heavily leverage the latest technologies around AI, machine learning, data analytics, robotics, and 3D printing. Together, these fields are changing the course of healthcare, enabling significantly faster and highly accurate diagnoses, and flexible treatment plans centered on individual patient needs. Medical devices that leverage this technology driven revolution will be critical to the future of healthcare.”

Wehde is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, and fellow in the Mayo Clinic Academy of Educational Excellence. He is also the James Renier Chair in Medical Device Innovation at the University of Minnesota Technology Leadership Institute. Wehde serves on the board of governors for the IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society and the IEEE Systems Council and is an affiliate of the University of Minnesota Medical Industry Leadership Institute. He is a senior fellow in the IEEE and a distinguished lecturer for the IEEE Systems Council.
