Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have developed a robotic glove prototype for stroke sufferers. The device can be used in homes to support rehabilitation and personal independence.

The two gloves facilitate repetitive movement and exercise of the hand and wrist. The technologies also record patient performance and transmit the data, allowing therapists to tailor treatment remotely and arrange a follow-up.

The researchers tried the system with 30 patients. The patients practiced using the gloves at home, for around 100 minutes each week. Clinical improvements were shown in their hand and arm function.

The team is now considering a follow-up project to improve recovery outcomes, while also searching for funding to turn the prototype into a product for home rehabilitation.
