The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, has been instrumental in growing the medical device industry in Minnesota. Still, translation of device innovations from university labs to the marketplace has been challenging in today’s economic environment. Since the technologies developed at the university are in the early stages, they typically require a significant investment from industrial partners to transform the idea into a realized product.

So, the university is minimizing its initial licensing costs for some devices through the Medical Device Opportunity Licensing Program, which aims to mitigate the risk for companies that want to license select technologies.

The university’s Office for Technology Commercialization has identified key early-stage medical device technologies that it will offer under simplified licensing terms to commercial partners. Eligible technologies were developed by inventors from the Medical School or College of Science and Engineering, have patents issued or pending, and are not slated for further development by the inventor(s).
