Medical Optics

Custom sapphire lenses, windows, and prisms designed for use in medical lasers, endoscopes, oximeters, and other instruments have been introduced by Meller Optics, Providence, RI. The sapphire medical optics are impervious to harsh chemicals, blood, and medications. The durable optics are ideally suited for instruments that are in frequent contact with the skin and are cleaned frequently. Sapphire is impervious to chlorine and fluorine gas, and it can transmit from the UV to 4.7 μm. Featuring Mohs 9 hardness, they are optically clear and manufactured in sizes from 0.25 to 10 in. dia. in round or square, concave or convex, and flat or stepped configurations.

Healthcare Polymers

Avient, Paris, France, has launched polymers designed to increase the durability of healthcare products and help improve the sustainability of medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging. The chemically resistant polymer formulations include pretested polymer colorants and functional additives. The Trilliant™ HC Healthcare Formulations series HC8910 and HC8920 offer improved chemical resistance compared to traditional flame-resistant (FR) polymers. They can also help prevent cracking and crazing after recurring disinfectant exposure. They are made without bisphenol A (BPA) and are available in standard or custom colors.

Ventilator Pressure Sensor

Superior Sensor Technology, Los Gatos, CA, has launched a pressure sensor family with proprietary oversampling technology and expanded dynamic range. The VN series pressure sensors incorporate an advance over-sampling technique to effectively eliminate all noise outside the band of interest. The proprietary oversampling technology also allows mechanical ventilators to directly use sensor outputs at full speed. The product family consists of seven new devices supporting a wide range of system applications from measuring flow to inlet, inspiratory, expiratory, and barometric pressures. With 24-bit output resolution, advanced filtering, exceptional zero stability, and support for greater than 1 kHz update rate, the sensors have been designed to maximize system accuracy and reduce error rates.

Stepper Drive

Kollmorgen, Radford, VA, has launched a stepper drive that offers smoothness, precision, and torque. The P80630-SDN stepper drive powers and controls stepper motors operating on 24–75 VDC with up to 5.5 A rms current per phase (7.8 A rms peak). It is ideal for systems requiring low-speed, point-to-point motion control for fixed loads. The compact drive achieves 10 percent greater output current in a 60 percent smaller package. The stepper drive supports conventional single-ended or differential step and direction interfaces (user-provided pulse train required) or CW/CCW command inputs.

Supply Chain Program

Dynamic Technology Solutions, Farmington Hills MI, has introduced a program that provides medical device manufacturers with guaranteed availability of electronic components necessary to maintain uninterrupted operation and availability of their medical equipment. The TechSupply ProgramSM also locks in the pricing of those components for extended periods. The program leverages the company’s supply chain experience and supplier relationships to avoid stock outs and component end-of-life issues. It is designed to provide security of supply and appropriate inventory levels and to ensure pricing stability while keeping customer inventory on its books until shipped to customers at predetermined quantities and intervals. The program also provides inventory control, regular shipments at predetermined intervals, and just-in-time order flows.
