Optical Fibers

Armadillo SIA, Riga, Latvia, has released an optical fiber designed to provide excellent deep-UV (ultraviolet) solarization resistance. The Optran® UV NSS Fiber optical fiber features a hermetic carbon layer, very low numerical aperture (NA) expansion, and superior optical stability while operating in the UVC spectral range and beyond, from 190 to 1200 nm. The high solarization-resistance fibers are available in any NA value from 0.12 to 0.30 and can be customized. Core diameters are available from 90 to 1000 μm. Comprised of biocompatible materials, the operating temperature range of the silica/silica optical fibers is –190 to +150 °C.

Shielded Connector

I-PEX USA, Austin, TX, has released a 35-HDH fully shielded, board-to-board connector with a mating height of 1.5 mm and a 0.35 mm pitch. The NOVASTACK® uses a 360° metal shielded ZenShield® design, which reduces EMI emanating from the connector. The connector is capable of 40 Gbps/lane transmission and supports the latest transmission standards. A large guide area on the metal shell guides the connector into the proper mating position even in a blind mating situation. The sensory clicking feeling during mating prevents a half-mating issue and also prevents damage due to additional load after mating.

Spring Brakes

Ogura, Somerset, NJ, has developed a line of small brakes for robotics and medical equipment applications. The MCNB-HS series power-off, spring-applied brakes have oversized bores to allow wires to pass through the shaft’s hollow bore. They accommodate encoders, cables, hoses, shafts, and tools. Internal designs allow for reduced backlash, high cycling, long life, optimized torque per size, thin profile, low weight, limited drag, low heat generation, and low power requirements. Torque is optimized to provide a smaller package size and lower weight. Standard sizes are available from 2.0 to 4.0 Nm static torque. Other torque ranges are available upon request.

Brushless Servo Motor

A line of brushless servo motors from Teknic, Victor, NY, are rated for washdown applications per IP66K/IP67. The Hudson motors can withstand high pressure sprays (IP66K) and short periods of submersion up to 1 m (IP67). The motors have a nonproprietary, open-standard communication design that allows them to be used with virtually any brushless servo drive regardless of protocol. Fast electrical time constants and high torque-to-inertia ratios provide responsive, accurate dynamic performance. Harmonically pure windings, helically skewed stator laminations, and custom-balanced EPM rotors are designed to provide smooth, quiet motion.
