Microcontroller

Microchip Technology, Chandler, AZ, has expanded its product line to include a new line of 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) that combine a controller area network (CAN) bus with an extensive array of core independent peripherals (CIPs). The CIPs increase system capabilities while making it easier for designers to create CAN-based applications without the complexity of added software. A key advantage of using a K83 MCU in CAN-based systems is that the CIPs provide deterministic response to real-time events. They shorten design time and can be easily configured through the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) tool.

Optical Fibers

Optical Fibers from OFS, Norcross, GA, offer an improved coating that enables wider operating temperatures than any commercially available polymer-coated fibers, according to the company. With its reliable performance for fiber optics in extreme conditions, Pyrocoat K optical fiber provides thermal stability over various continuous temperatures/lifetimes: 275 °C for 80 years, 300 °C for 13 years, 325 °C for 2.2 years, and 350 °C for 18 days. These new optical fibers can also withstand short excursions at even higher temperatures and long-duration stability at low temperature extremes, at and below –65 °C.

Automated Injection Molding Workflow

Stäubli, Duncan, SC, offers a workflow system for fully automated injection molding. Networked Industry 4.0-compatible components enable each of the individual processes to be coordinated and optimized to create an automation solution. According to the company, its SMED — Single-Minute Exchange of Die — allows the exchange of injection molds to be performed to the highest safety standards within minutes. The system integrates sensors that detect the condition of the mold, the molding force of the magnetic clamping system and a variety of other factors and feed that data into the process. Any faults, like a failure to reach the correct operating temperature, will be recognized early so the fault can be corrected.

MEMS Pressure Sensors

Pewatron, Zurich, Switzerland, offers two MEMS pressure sensors from Fujikura. The AG3 and AP3 series, which were developed originally for highly accurate measurement of blood pressure, have now been shown to be suitable for other applications, such as dialysis or treatment of DVT — anywhere where excellent resolution and a fast sampling rate are required. The sensors feature an exceptionally low noise analog output signal. True 16 bit resolution at a proper AD conversion is possible, and all 16 bits can be evaluated — with no fuzzy bits. The analog series is a two-chip system consisting of a MEMS sensor chip and a signal-conditioning chip. The signal conditioning IC does not have A/D and D/A converter steps in the gain amplifier. They also have single-point pressure threshold detection.
