In December, we asked Medical Design Briefs readers to cast their ballot to choose from our 11 Products of the Month the technology they felt was the most significant new introduction to the design engineering community in 2022. This year, our two winners both address biocompatibility, which is key to the development of medical devices that come into contact with patients. Here are the winners of the 2022 Medical Design Briefs’ Readers’ Choice Products of the Year.

3D Printable Biomaterials

Evonik, Darmstadt, Germany, is expanding its portfolio of 3D printable biomaterials for medical technology. VESTA-KEEP® iC4800 3DF is a new osteoconductive PEEK filament that improves fusion between bone and implants. The high-performance polymer can be processed in common extrusion-based 3D printing technologies such as fused filament fabrication (FFF). Osteoconductivity was achieved by using biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), a functional special additive. With a diameter of 1.75 mm, the PEEK filament in natural color is wound onto 250 or 500 g spools. It can be used directly in standard FFF 3D printers for PEEK materials.

Easy Locking Cable Connectors

Snap-in Connectors from Binder, Camarillo, CA, are designed to meet the specific electromechanical connectivity requirements for use in medical devices. Biocompatible, non-irritating to skin, and resistant to disinfectants, the Series 570 Easy Locking Connector (ELC) consists of two assemblies that automatically snap into place. An asymmetric hexagon shape in the mating area aligns the plug to the socket to prevent mismating, while snap-in hooks ensure effective locking. The locked parts can only be separated with a special detachment tool, preventing unintended disconnection by the user. The connector protects to IP54 against dust, splashing water, and accidental electrical contact, making it suitable for hygienically sensitive environments.
