LCD User Interface

here, Lake Zurich, IL, has launched a programming-free LCD user interface that allows seamless and code-free integration onto any embedded platform, eliminating the need to write software to control the display. The user interface does not require LCD programming knowledge, which enables users to focus on desired functionality rather than on writing device drivers. The product’s three-button keyboard allows developers to implement a full UI without having to be concerned with reading buttons, debouncing, or programming resources on the host embedded system. The interface includes all control firmware onboard to simplify device design. It contains an ARM M0 processor and free API. Included fonts and user-defined bitmaps allow for addition of 64K color displays to any embedded system.

Miniature Pinch Valves

Clippard, Cincinnati, OH, offers a line of miniature pinch valves. The NPV Series solenoid-operated devices are designed to open and close tubes for controlling flow of liquids and gases. Unlike valves that have internal passages that may cause small amounts of fluid to remain in the valve, these pinch valves have no areas or dead volume where fluid can become trapped. Only the inside of the tubing contacts the fluid. Energizing the solenoid retracts or attracts the plunger, which opens or closes the tube. De-energizing the solenoid allows the plunger to return to its original state.

Brushless Motors

A family of four 12-mm OD micro slotless brushless permanent magnet motors is available from CI Kasei, Tokyo, Japan. The motors have integrated speed control electronics that provide stall or peak torque values ranging from 0.88 mNm (0.125 oz-in) to 1.14 mNm (0.161 oz-in). The shorter C12C-XI-S and C12C-X2-S models use sleeve bearings and operate at 6480 rpm and 7920 rpm, respectively. The ball bearing models, C12C-X2-S-B and C12C-X2-S, are used in applications that handle applications with heavier mechanical loads. Current consumption is below 25 ma. The speed constant varies from 2.14 to 2.16 Krpm/V for the C12C-XI models. All motors are energized at a very low output of 3 Vdc.

Hybrid Servo Motors

A full range of NEMA 23 frame direct drive hybrid servo motors is available from QuickSilver Controls, San Dimas, CA. Four stack sizes provide 80 oz-in (0.56 Nm) through 430 oz-in (3 Nm) continuous torque, with top speeds from 1000 to 4000 rpm. Hybrid servo motors are well suited for direct drive applications because they eliminate the need for gearheads in most applications. These high-torque motors match well to loads in the 500–2000 rpm range, typical of lead screws and belt drives. They provide a significant increase in both power and efficiency over conventional servo motors in these speed ranges. The PVIA control system includes patented damping methods to allow wide ranges of inertial mismatch without retuning or notch filters, reducing the need for inertial matching of the motor to the load.
