Product of the Month: Self-Clinching Steel Locknuts

Self-clinching steel locknuts from PennEngineering, Danboro, PA, integrate a unique Tri-Dent® locking feature to hold mating screws tight over time by providing sufficient torsional resistance to withstand vibration, thermal cycling, and other disruptive forces that could loosen the screws in service. The PEM® Type SL™ prevailing torque locknuts, which meet three-cycle locking performance to effectively self-lock the threads of mating screws, further allow for the screws to be removed and reattached repeatedly as needed without compromising the locking threads. The locknuts install permanently in host metal sheets to become integral parts of an assembly. The locknuts are available in thread sizes #4-40 through 3/8-16 and M3 through M10. They are recommended for use in aluminum or steel sheets as thin as 0.040 in. (1 mm) with maximum hardness HRB 80 and HB 150.

Toughened Adhesive

A toughed epoxy for use in industrial applications has been released by EpoxySet, Lincoln, RI. The SetWORX™ 1510 has passed the cytotoxicity tests required by ISO 10993-5, making it ideal for medical device manufacturing. The innovative chemistry yields high bond strength to metals, ceramic, glass, and most plastics. The fast gel time of 15 minutes makes it ideal for production, and its excellent electrical insulating properties are suitable for electronic applications. The epoxy has an easy-to-use 1:1 mix ratio and medium viscosity so it can be dispensed readily through cartridges or through meter mix dispensing equipment.

Linear Servo Motor

Nippon Pulse America, Radford, VA, has introduced one of the smallest linear motors available for high-density applications. The L250SSS linear shaft motor is a 25-mm diameter linear servo motor with a single winding. It uses the company’s smallest available forcer — only 30 mm in length — and its maximum usable stroke reaches more than 2 m in length. The motor is part of the existing SS series, which features small forcers and stack-lengths for high-density applications. The SS series motors are available in 25, 32, and 35 mm shaft diameter sizes, and with single, double, triple, and quadruple winding options. The motors in the SS series are ideal for life sciences and industrial applications in which multiple forcers are required to travel along a single shaft.

Power Supplies

TDK Corporation, National City, CA, has introduced a line of low-profile, triple-output power supplies. Packaged in the industry standard 2 × 4 in. footprint, the TDK-Lambda CUT35 requires no minimum load, simplifying installation. Operating from a universal input voltage of 85–265 Vac, the CUT35 is available in two standard models. The CUT35-522 offers 5V +12 V output voltages, and the CUT35-5FF provides 5V ± 15V with an output power of 35 W. The units can be configured as dual-output power supplies (5V 24V or 5V 30V) by connecting outputs two and three in series. The two-converter topology enables zero minimum load operation and good regulation and provides 500 Vac isolation between the 5-V and secondary outputs. The 5-V output is user adjustable from 5 to 5.25 V and does not impact the secondary output voltage settings.

Differential Oscilloscope

Pico Technology, Cambridgeshire, UK, has introduced a high-resolution differential oscilloscope. The PicoScope 4444 features four true differential input channels and a range of accessories for measurements from millivolt to 1000 V CAT III applications. According to the company, the scope addresses the perennial problem of making accurate voltage waveform measurements on circuit elements that are not ground-referenced, without the risk of short circuits that could damage the device under test or the measuring instrument. A novel intelligent probe interface can also provide power for active probes such as Hall Effect ac/dc type active current probes.

Peristaltic Pump

A peristaltic pump with single-use cartridge technology is available from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group, Falmouth, UK. The Quantum peristaltic pump enables higher downstream process yields throughout the pressure range. The ReNu cartridge enables its aseptic fluid paths to be positioned quickly and accurately ready for use. Flow linearity is achieved across the 43.5 psi (3 bar) SU processing pressure range up to 5.3 gal/min (20 L/min), with trace pulsation of only ±1.74 psi (±0.12 bar), which enables constant pressure, thus maximizing process efficiency and yield. The pump offers ultralow shear and an integrated 4000:1 speed control ratio. The user interface is located at the front of the pump.
