Part Marking Device and Kit

Roland DGA, Irvine, CA, has launched a new unique device identification (UDI) barcode impact printer with an optional direct part marking (DPM) kit. The METAZA MPX-95 with DPM kit was developed for use in medical environments for permanently marking scalpels, forceps, and other medical instruments. With its diamond stylus and powerful impact force, the printer can imprint on a wide variety of metals, including stainless steel, iron, titanium, platinum gold, silver, copper, nickel, and aluminum, quickly and with pinpoint accuracy. Imprinting individual medical instruments with a serial number, 2D symbol, or other markings enables management of those instruments, including stock availability, location, usage history, and maintenance records.

Sepac, Elmira, NY, has released a spring engaged brake (SEB) for motion control. The SEB series is spring engaged and electromagnetically released for use dry or in oil, depending on the friction material used. Robust friction materials are available with higher torque density for both static and dynamic engagement. Multiple disc configurations are available when higher torque is needed in a smaller package. OEMs can also select custom coatings, enclosures, and materials for conditions as varied as water, oil, salt spray, high pressure, low/high temperature, and even a vacuum environment. The series offers custom voltages, as well as fully potted coils (standard or vacuum potted), dual coils, and step-down power designs.

Tabletop Robot

Universal Robots, Ann Arbor, MI, has released a collaborative tabletop robot for light assembly tasks and automated workbench scenarios. The compact UR3 robot weighs only 24.3 lb (11 kg), but has a payload of 6.6 lb (3 kg), 360-degree rotation on all wrist joints, and infinite rotation on the end joint. The robot can also be used in a separate work station mounted on the table, picking, assembling, and placing parts in optimized production flows. Because of its compact form and easy programming, it’s easy to switch it between tasks to meet agile manufacturing needs. It has a default force sensing of 150 N but can be set to stop if it encounters a force as low as 50 N in its route.

LSR Equipment

Graco Advanced Fluid Dispense, North Canton, OH, has launched new barrel stack designs for its F-5 and F4- 55 two-component liquid silicone rubber (LSR) injection molding meter, mix, and dispense equipment. The updated barrel stacks are available in both multi-pass and single pass designs. The new stacks are easy to clean and assemble and have no tapered national pipe thread (NPT) threads. The new barrel stacks use plastic molded mixers, which stack upon each other. These mixers prevent the sidewalling problem that may occur with older stainless steel mixer designs caused by repeated removal and installation. The plastic mixer also does not suffer from installation damage due to a tight tolerance between the hosing and mixer. Greater clearance makes the new barrel stack easier to clean by reducing thread galling.

Emuge Corp., West Boylston, MA, has introduced new end mills designed to enable substantially more material removal with fewer passes in five-axis machining. The circle-segment cutters are ideal for machining turbine blades, impellers, and blisks, and for use in mold making applications. They feature unique forms with large radii in the cutting area of the mills, allowing a larger axial depth of cut during prefinishing and finishing operations. The solid-carbide end mills are offered in four geometries: barrel-shaped, oval form, taper form, and lens shape. Oval and taper form mills are ideal for curved shapes such as blades or straight-walled pockets, freely engaging more of the cutting edge. Barrel design mills provide highly effective flank milling to the sides of spiral grooves and similar applications, while lens shape mills are best for narrow channels or in lands on molds.
