A three-layered face mask contains a copper-infused nano-coated fabric, a sustainable bamboo fabric and an ePTFE (a biomaterial) filter. The Hygenmask lacks ear loops, instead using elastic head loops that go over the head and can be tightened for a customized fit.

The mask was tested at the WVU School of Medicine’s Center for Inhalation Toxicology (iTOX) to test the product. Since the onset of the pandemic, the center has been at the forefront of testing all sorts of masks from N95 alternatives to WVU gaiters to the Singer’s Mask to double masks.

Researchers conducted fit testing, which evaluates how well a mask protects the person wearing the mask. A score of 100 is necessary to pass an N95 mask. Gaiters and saggy disposable masks typically score a “one.” The copper-infused mask ranged from 6 to 15 on the study participants. The Center found that it blocked up to 93% of droplets being respired.

The mask sits away from a person’s mouth enough, making it more comfortable and making the wearer more likely to keep it on for a longer period of time.
