In the field of radiation oncology, the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is capable of delivering high doses of radiation with submillimeter accuracy anywhere in the body. The newest addition to the CyberKnife® product line, the CyberKnife® VSITM System, leverages and extends the benefits of radiosurgery — high accuracy and excellent healthy tissue sparing — to enable delivery of high-precision radiation therapy. VSI (which stands for Versatile, Simple, and Intelligent) gives clinicians greater versatility by providing additional options for them to consider when determining the optimal course of treatment for each patient, whether it is hypo-fractionated radiosurgery or conventionally fractionated robotic intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT™). This enables physicians to customize care around the unique needs of each patient, thereby expanding the population of patients who can benefit from this system’s precision.
Managing patient and target motion presents one of the most significant challenges in radiation treatment delivery. Unlike other radiation delivery systems, the CyberKnife System offers motion-tracking capabilities that adapt treatment delivery based on patient and target motion using continual image guidance and robotic mobility. For example, in the treatment of lung tumors, the CyberKnife VSI System intelligently tracks respiratory motion in real time and automatically adapts the treatment delivery to changes in the patient’s breathing pattern. In the treatment of prostate cancer, the CyberKnife VSI System addresses the unique challenges of random and excessive target motion by using intelligent and adaptive image guidance. These capabilities ultimately help spare surrounding healthy tissue and critical structures, minimizing treatment complications and side effects.
The CyberKnife VSI System features several product enhancements, including a 1000 MU/minute X-band linear accelerator, advanced visualization capabilities, automated segmentation capabilities, and logical workflow designed to enhance the physician and patient experience.
The CyberKnife VSI System extends the CyberKnife System’s robotic radio-surgery capabilities to enable high-precision radiation therapy and Robotic IMRT. Treatments are designed and optimized to fit every patient’s unique needs without compromising accuracy, treatment times, or critical structure sparing. The availability of thousands of beam angles and intra-fraction corrections for patient and target motion enables the creation and treatment of the best treatment plans, regardless of the number of fractions.
A comprehensive set of tools to manage every aspect of patient care, from pre-planning to post-delivery, is provided with the CyberKnife VSI System. The system integrates readily and easily into an institution’s existing infrastructure. The CyberKnife VSI System can be installed into existing vaults
designed for gantry-based linear accelerator delivery systems, saving both time and money. Compatibility with well-known Oncology Information System infrastructure solutions is assured for simple integration of the CyberKnife VSI System.
Treatment planning is performed in a clinically intuitive manner using the MultiPlan® Treatment Planning System. From scripted planning capabilities to state-of-the-art dose calculations, the advanced tools enable the creation of expert-level plans in minimal time.
The robotic capabilities of the system are leveraged to ensure that the plans created are the plans delivered. The continual image guidance, target tracking, and intra-fraction corrections enable automatic adaptive treatment delivery. Innovative motion compensation technologies recognize and automatically correct for all patient and target motion — from respiratory motion to random prostate motion — without user intervention or treatment couch repositioning.
