Software Penetration Validation
mdi Consultants, Great Neck, NY, now offers software penetration testing to demonstrate full conformance with cybersecurity requirements under ISO 27001 and FD&C Act section 524B “Ensuring Cybersecurity of Medical Devices” for businesses engaged in software usage for their medical devices and other related regulatory products produced under ISO and FDA standards. Penetration testing under a controlled environment provides the necessary validation studies to affrm to the regulatory and/or certifying agencies that vulnerabilities that may leave a system open to hacking have been found and mitigated. The studies are conducted by a cybersecurity firm with an extensive background in penetration testing, code review, and configuration audit in fields such as finance, critical infrastructure, and government services.

Turning Insert Grades
Sandvik Coromant, Mebane, NC, has introduced two new PVD insert grades. Both GC1205 and GC1210 are designed to enable secure, high-precision turning of aged nickel-based HRSA. A hard, fine-grained new substrate, the latest physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating technology, and optimized edge-line integrity provide increased flank wear and secondary notch wear resistance, superior edge-line security, and reduced flaking. The new grades prolong tool life in last-stage machining and intermediate-stage machining of medical components. The grades complement each other thanks to an overlap in the assortment. GC1205 is a finishing grade for machined surfaces in LSM and ISM applications. GC1210 complements GC1205 when more toughness is required and is mainly used in ISM applications for nonmachined surfaces.

Check Valve
Air Logic, Racine, WI, has created a robust innovation in low cracking force in-line non-return valves. The plastic bodies with preloaded elastomer umbrellas are designed to mitigate the common problems of previous check valves, such as chemical attacks and inconsistent performance. The polypropylene and silicone model was engineered specifically for the medical device industry to be compliant with industry ratings such as ISO 10993 and avoids the incorporation of common conflicting materials such as BPA. Preset options include cracking pressures under 2 psi with five different barb sizes, as well as the option to customize.

Miniature Ball Screws
Thomson Industries, Inc., Downers Grove, IL, offers new miniature metric precision ball screw sizes with U.S.-based distribution. The German-engineered ball screw line uses a unique multi-start ball return design that maximizes support for higher loads. This design provides precise, smooth, and quiet operation for applications requiring high precision and load handling in confined spaces. Using more balls enables higher loads to be supported. The ball screws use a multi-liner return system that maximizes the number of circuits and loaded balls in the nut. A multi-liner return system floats axially to compensate for misalignment.

Servo Drive
Kollmorgen, Radford, VA, has updated its AKD2G servo drive. The new features support PROFINET IRT and Ethernet/IP with CIP Sync as well as CANopen®, EtherCAT®, and FSoE time-synchronized communication protocols. Each protocol is rigorously tested with a variety of motion controllers and certified by industry standards organizations. The servo drive update allows for synchronized motion between multiple drives using a wide variety of control architectures. It is ideal for use in applications that require highly precise coordination across multiple axes of motion.

Customized RFID Labels
Schreiner MediPharm, Blauvelt, NY, has introduced late-stage customization capabilities for its RFID-Labels series. The new service enables the company’s smart labels to be supplied on short notice with order-specific programming for their integrated RFID chips. The labels are initially pre-produced in larger volumes with integrated RFID inlays and warehoused as semi-finished goods. Upon customer request, these preproduced labels are customized via digital printing and delivered on an expedited basis. The chips can be individually programmed as needed. Versions with preproduced functional labels also are available.

Low-Current Fuses
KYOCERA AVX, Fountain Inn, SC, has expanded its low-current fuses line. The 0201 case sizes for the Accu-Guard II use thin-film technology to achieve precise control over the components’ physical and electrical characteristics and deliver extremely low current ratings in compact 0603, 0402, and new 0201 packages. The fuses offer current ratings extending from 28 to 200 mA. The single-use fuses also have a 50 A interrupt rating and are additionally rated for 32 V, >1 MΩ post-fusing resistance, and operating temperatures extending from –55° to +125 °C.

Push Type Solenoids
Push type solenoids from Magnetic Sensor Systems, Van Nuys, CA, include a series of 18 different low-cost open frame solenoids to select from based on the voltage, duty cycle, force of up to 96 oz (26.7 N), and stroke requirements. The clean, high efficiency S-18-100-QH open frame push type solenoids can be operated at a variety of duty cycles (voltage dependent) and are the ideal for medical dispensing. The series of lightweight 4.0 oz (1.11 N) solenoids has a stroke of up to 1.000 in ± 0.02. (25.4 mm ± 0.508 mm) is 1.00 (25.4 mm) wide × 0.84 in. (21.34 mm) high × 1.735 ± 0015 (44 mm 0.381 mm) long. A low friction brass guide along with a PTFE-coated plunger ensures exceptionally long life. The solenoids feature 0.187 (4.8 mm) spade connectors and on each side, two 8-32 or M4 × 0.7 threaded mounting holes.

Linear Voice Coil Motors
Two 12.7 mm (0.5 in) stroke linear voice coil motors have been released by Moticont, Van Nuys, CA. The LVCM-013-019-02M (metric) and the LVCM-013-019-02 (Imperial) brushless high-speed linear servo motors have a 12.7 mm (0.5 in) long stroke, a high-force-to-size ratio of 0.81 N (2.9 oz), and a peak force of 2.55 N (9.2 oz) at 10% duty cycle. Featuring low inertia and high acceleration/deceleration, these miniature linear servo motors are clean, quiet, efficient, and have high accuracy and high repeatability when operated in a closed loop as a DC servo motor. Control electronics such as single and multi-axis servo controllers and linear encoders are available for both motors.
