Supercapacitor Modules

Double-layer, series-connected electrochemical supercapacitor modules are now available from Kyocera AVX, Fountain Inn, SC. The new SCM Series modules can be used by themselves or in conjunction with primary or secondary batteries to extend battery life and backup time or provide instantaneous power pulses in hold-up, energy harvesting, and pulse power application. The series exhibits very high capacitance, very low ESR, high efficiency, high power density, and excellent pulse power handling characteristics. The modules are rated for operating temperatures extending from –40° to +65 °C and lifetimes that extend to millions of cycles. They are also lead-free compatible, RoHS compliant, and compliant with the UL 810A standard for electrochemical capacitors.

Organosilane Antimicrobials

Gelest, Inc., Morrisville, PA, has upgraded and expanded the manufacturing and formulation capabilities for its organosilane antimicrobial product line. The emphasis on scale and economy is designed to prepare the BIOSAFE organosilane antimicrobial product line for widespread application. Silicon-based antimicrobials perform differently than traditional antimicrobials. BIOSAFE antimicrobial imparts bacteriostatic, fungistatic, and algistatic properties and binds to substrates with silanol reactivity, assembling on surfaces into a layer of densely packed molecules with a strong positive charge. This positive charge and its C18 chains physically rupture the cell wall, causing cell lysis, and nothing is transferred or absorbed.

e-Paper Displays

Review Display Systems (RDS) Milwaukee, WI, has released a range of monochrome and color e-Paper displays from Holitech Technology Corp. Display panels range in sizes from 1.54 to 31.2-in. Segment and dot matrix types, with a range of different resolutions are available. Ideal for low-power applications, the displays use a bistable display technology where no applied power is required to maintain a display image. The display image will be retained when all power sources are removed. An e-Paper display only consumes power when the display image is being changed or updated. The internal structure of the display includes a layer of transparent electrophoretic liquid that contains microcapsules or microcups. Each microcup contains white particles with negative charge, yellow particles with negative charge, magenta particles with positive charge, and cyan particles with positive charge.

Titanium Foils and Alloys

Arnold Magnetic Technologies, Rochester, NY, offers a range of thin-rolled titanium foils and alloys in a variety of CP grades and a broad range of thicknesses and widths. Suitable for many applications, including medical devices, the foils and alloys are constructed of a strong, lightweight, corrosion-resistant, biocompatible material that is highly workable, ductile, and weldable. An ultrathin gauge foil is available in thickness down to 2 μm (0.00008 in.). Thin gauge options (0.020–0.0005) in are also available. Widths are available up to 17.5 in., depending on thickness. Widths as narrow as 0.031 in. can be achieved through slitting.

Industrial Automation

Renishaw, West Dundee, IL, has released a line specifically designed for the industrial automation market. The RCS product line focuses on the problems associated with manual setup, calibration, and maintenance of robots, such as operational accuracy and repeatability. The range includes three products: RCS L-90, RCS T-90, and RCS P-series, all supported by a dedicated software suite. RCS L-90 is a ballbar device that improves robot system accuracy, reduces deployment time, and monitors robot health with simple routines controlled by its supporting software suite. RCS T-90 is a tri-ballbar system that enables robot users to identify root causes of poor performance, with further comprehensive tests to capture critical robot information. RCS P-series integrates a permanent probing solution within a robot cell to apply in-process metrology and automatic recovery.
