Torque Sensors

A low-capacity torque sensor from Sensor Technology, Wroxton, UK, offers accurate measurement down to 200 mNm (0.2 Nm) for applications including medical devices, protheses, and implants. The Torq-Sense SGR 510/520 torque sensors cover capacities from 0.2 to 1 Nm, making the full range 0.2-13,000 Nm. The SGR sensors can accurately measure and record sudden spikes in torque load. They measure the torque 4000 time per second and uses highperformance signal conditioning to provide a corruption-free, high bandwidth torque monitoring solution. They provide 250 percent overrange and 400 percent overload capabilities, elimination of side and end load errors, and real-time temperature compensation.

Light-Curable Adhesive

Dymax, Torrington, CT, has released its first medical product in its new Hybrid Light-Curable (HLC) series of adhesives. HLC-M-1000 is a patentpending adhesive platform combining the qualities of anionic and free radical chemistries into one formulation. The incorporation of contact curing enables instant bonding in dark areas and to a broad range of substrates, including opaque and light-blocking materials. HLC materials provide fast cure under very low intensity, limited-to-no blooming with proper light cure, better aesthetics, humidity resistance (even without light), and flexible bond. Substrates do not need to be translucent, and exposure to light curing increases bond integrity while reducing blooming in exposed areas.

Inspection Module

A bone screw inspection and measurement module from VisionX, Pointe-Claire, QC, Canada, includes a dedicated dualrotary module specifically designed for bone screw inspection and a tool for completely operator-independent thread inspection. VisionGauge® digital optical comparator allows the full rotation of the screw (to check run-out, for example), its orientation at the helix angle, etc. The module also includes dedicated workholding (either pneumatic or manual) compatible with bone screws that have a through hole as well as those without. When fitted with a pneumatic chuck, the comparator can be used in a fully automated bone screw manufacturing cell, with robot loading and unloading, for complete lights out operation.

Thermoplastic Elastomer

Avient Corp., Cleveland, OH, has introduced a new bio-derived healthcare thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). Versaflex HC BIO BT218 grade is formulated with nearly 40 percent firstgeneration biomass content, resulting in a lower carbon footprint than traditional alternatives. The 71 Shore A formulation provides critical application performance such as weldability, kink resistance, and tensile strength comparable to leading medical tubing materials, including silicone and standard TPEs. The bio-derived grade offers greenhouse gas emissions at 2.35 kg CO2e/kg product, a nearly 25 percent lower cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint (PCF) than the standard Versaflex HC BT218 grade.

Medical Power Supplies

Bel Fuse Inc, Santa Clara, CA, has expanded its EOS Power Series for medical applications. The MEPG300 and MEPG500 devices are based on new, efficient Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology. The ACDC power supplies accommodate a universal input voltage of 90-264 VAC, delivering up to 300 W of output power with forced air cooling. They are available in six single output voltages ranging from 12 to 58 V. The series is built to EN/IEC 60601-1, with 2× MOPP isolation options for Class I applications. The power supplies provide up to 500 W of regulated output power over a wide input range of 90-264 VAC. They are also available in six single output voltages ranging from 12 to 58 V. The series can be used in applications that require low power loss and simple thermal management.
