What major event in history was a catalyst for advancements in prosthetics?

World War II. After the war, veterans were complaining about the quality of their limbs. A team at the University of California, Berkeley, helped to develop the quadrilateral socket by developing a jig fitting system for amputations above the knee. The jigs made fitting of the socket for the residual limb easier and made it more comfortable for amputees to walk.
