Compact Linear Induction Motor

H2W, Santa Clarita, CA, has developed a compact linear induction motor that can generate 10.6 lb [47 N] at a 15 percent duty cycle. Operating at 208 VAC 3-phase 60 Hz, the synchronous velocity of the LMAA-04-01 is 160 in./sec [4 m/s]. The LIM was designed for highspeed operation; however, it can also be operated at stall (zero speed) to produce static thrust. The motor is encapsulated using high-temperature 350 °F [176 °C] potting compound, which protects the components and seals it from moisture.

Punch Tap

Emuge Corp., West Boylston, MA, has introduced a new punch tap line in North America. According to the company, the Punch Tap is the first tool of its kind for helical thread forming in cast and wrought aluminum alloys and similar lightweight materials. The taps provide a shortened tool path process for producing internal threads in under half a second, resulting in significantly less energy consumption during the machining process and a reduction in threading time by 75 percent compared with cold forming and conventional tapping.

Switching Power Supply

An AC/DC switching power supply series from Bicker Elektronik, Donauwoerth, Germany, was developed for space-saving installation in medical devices and medical computer systems. The 3 × 5 in. BEO-3000M open frame power supplies are available with precisely regulated DC single output voltages of 12 V, 24, 36, or 48 V, which can be fine-tuned in the range of ±5 percent. In addition, a 5-V standby and a 12-V fan output is available. The particularly high quality and robustly built medical power supplies for reliable 24/7 continuous operation provide an output power of 250 W fanless or 300 W with 10 CFM airflow. With a high efficiency of up to 94 percent, a standby power consumption of less than 0.3 W and an operating temperature range of –40 to +70 °C, the series is also usable in closed systems.

PVD Coating System

VaporTech, Longmont, CO, has released a system that enables manufacturers to bring PVD coating in house. The VT-3000i can deposit a wide range of materials using physical vapor deposition (PVD) or plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD), as well as coating temperature-sensitive substrates using its unique low-temperature arc vapor deposition technology (LTAVD®). The VT-3000i system features a much smaller footprint and updated design that makes the equipment easier to integrate into manufacturing facilities. The system takes up about 40 percent less space than its predecessor. The system is designed to eliminate complexities and increase ease of installation, operation, and maintenance.

Thermal Management

Laird, London, has launched a comprehensive thermal management tool that helps engineers quickly select the optimum solution for their application. The Web-based Thermal Wizard™ employs proprietary application calculators to determine the optimal thermal management solutions at the thermoelectric module, thermoelectric assembly, or liquid cooling system level. Building up the company's AZTEC™ thermoelectric module (TEM) simulation software, the wizard enables thermal designers to input their known cooling requirement (Qc). If the cooling requirement is unknown, the wizard can calculate the Qc based on the defined application: device cooling, enclosure cooling, air cooling, or liquid cooling.

Contour Measurement System

Mahr Inc., Providence, RI, has introduced the first in new a line of surface finish and contour measurement systems. The MarSurf CD series takes allows users to improve the manufacturing quality of workpieces with faster throughput, higher accuracy, and flexibility for a broader range of workpieces. The system allows for the measurement of the shape of a surface, often referred to as the contour or form, and provides dimensional information such as angles, depths, distances, and radius. The drive units move the contour probe with positioning speeds of up to 200 mm/s.
