Using magnetic patterns resembling a spiderweb, researchers have developed a biosensor platform capable of detecting biosensors 20 times faster than existing biosensors. The technology can be used for early diagnosis and recurrence diagnosis of diseases such as cancer.

The movement of biomolecules such as proteins and DNA is slow when the transport depends only on diffusion, so the magnetic field is used to increase the speed. With the external magnetic field, biomolecules labeled with superparamagnetic particles could be moved and easily controlled and detected with an ultrasensitive magnetic sensor.

The biosensor platform uses a web-shaped micromagnetic pattern. It improved the sensing ability of the biosensor as it increased the ability to collect low-density biomolecules by attracting the biomolecules labeled with the superparamagnetic particles to the sensing area. The pattern was designed to move the particles toward the center of the biosensor. When a rotating magnetic field is applied to the web-shaped magnetic pattern, it attracts the labeled biomolecules faster.

The team also succeeded in monitoring the biomolecules conjugated to the superparamagnetic particles at a distance from the sensing area. The superparamagnetic particles not only play the role of biomolecular cargo for transportation, but also act as labels for the sensor to indicate the location of biomolecules.
