Space Telescope Optics Aids Design of Eye-Saving Light Bulb
Posted in Features, Optics/Photonics on Thursday, July 01 2010
Throughout its existence, NASA has made many amazing discoveries in the field of optics that have led to improved eye care and eyewear applications on Earth. Innovations such as laser eye-tracking for LASIK vision-correction procedures, eye trackers that enable people with severe disabilities to communicate and control their environment using only their eye movements, and scratch-resistant and radiation-blocking lenses are just a taste of the Space Agency's optical accomplishments.

Scheduling Accessory Assists Patients with Cognitive Disorders
Posted in Features, Electronics, Treatment Devices on Thursday, July 01 2010
Neuropsychology is the study of how the brain relates to behavior, emotion, and cognition. Clinical neuropsychologists evaluate the behavioral effects of neurological and developmental disorders stemming from brain injury, strokes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. Millions of Americans are currently living with these cognitive disorders, including a growing number of veterans returning from Iraq with brain injuries. The disorders often result in cognitive impairments that make it difficult to plan daily activities and stay on task, affecting independence, quality of life, and employment.

Rotary Encoder
Posted in Products, Automation & Controls on Thursday, July 01 2010
The MSR 40 modular steel tape rotary encoder from RSF Elektronik (Tarsdorf, Austria) is now available in North America through the HEIDENHAIN Corporation (Schaumburg, IL). The encoder is suitable for measurement applications with diameters of 6 in (150 mm) to 6 ft (~2 m). The steel tape of the MSR 40 utilizes the proven Single-Field Scanning principle with 200 μm grating pitch, offering ease of mounting with high achievable angular resolution. Accuracy of the system is ±30 μm/m with an operating temperature of 0 to 50 °C. The MDR version uses a steel ring tensioning cleat for encoders mounted to a steel surface, allowing for thermal expansion, while the MER version uses a rubber gasket with a low-profile tensioning cleat for other mounting surfaces. Line counts of up to 20,000 are available.

RFID Cabinet
Posted in Products, Patient Data Management on Thursday, July 01 2010
The new RFID-Enabled Cabinet from Terso Solutions (Madison, WI) is suitable for operating room supply centers and catheterization labs. It has 25 cubic feet of storage space and measures 36" wide, 26" deep, and 80" tall. To access the cabinet, the user presents an electronic access control card to a cabinet-mounted scanner and removes the needed RFID-tagged product. Once the door is closed, the RFID system records the items that were removed and communicates the information to the hosted database. The enclosure also monitors its internal temperature and keeps track of inventory expiration dates. End users can access Terso's centralized database via a Web-based user interface or a cellular network. The system hardware, software, and services combine as a precise turnkey solution for inventory control and product traceability.
