A team of scientists in a collaboration between the Cambridge Graphene Centre at the University of Cambridge, UK, and Plastic Logic Ltd., also in Cambridge, have created a prototype of a flexible display incorporating graphene in its pixels’ electronics, marking the first time that graphene has been used in a transistor-based flexible device.

For this prototype, the backplane was combined with an electrophoretic imaging film to create an ultra-low power and durable display. Future iterations may incorporate liquid crystal and organic light emitting diode technology to achieve full color and video functionality.

They say that this is a significant step forward to enable fully wearable and flexible devices. And that lightweight flexible active-matrix backplanes may also be used for sensors, with novel digital medical imaging and gesture recognition applications already in development.
